An update from VirusTotal

Our goal is simple: to help keep you safe on the web. And we’ve worked hard to ensure that the services we offer continually improve. But as a small, resource-constrained company, that can sometimes be challenging. So we’re delighted that Google, a long-time partner, has acquired VirusTotal. This is great news for you, and bad news for malware generators, because:

  • The quality and power of our malware research tools will keep improving, most likely faster; and
  • Google’s infrastructure will ensure that our tools are always ready, right when you need them.

VirusTotal will continue to operate independently, maintaining our partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts. This is an exciting step forward. Google has a long track record working to keep people safe online and we look forward to fighting the good fight together with them.

    2. Knowing Google it won't use it's own knowledge but search at other locations. This would seriously increase results.

Also, I hope they include Android Anti-Virus systems soon. Since a lot of them are a serious Hoax.

  11. Glad to hear that Joshua is acquiring more data for analysis .. is he still playing the game? Can we trust him to make the right decision when it comes to critical crossroads?

  12. they better not ruin it like they ruined Zynamics. Just because there is a wealth of internal information for Google to gain doesn't mean they should stop taking money from paying customers (virustotal intelligence service)

Google assimilates yet another. Very cool though.. and now.. if only they acquired a company like FireEye and integrated the VT submissions somehow they would immediately be a formidable player in the network security space.

1.) The quality and power of our malware research tools will keep improving, most likely faster; and

2.) Google’s infrastructure will ensure that our tools are always ready, right when you need them.

Let me dumb it down for you.

1.) Bigger team, more resources, faster development == BETTER PRODUCT.

2.) Googles server farms, and resources == insane reliability, quality and speeds.

We appreciate your insightful comment on the virus total blog. Thanks for using the services THEY PROVIDE FOR FREE TO YOU.

    2. Lemme guess........you still believe in Santa Claus, right?
I did read what is written there which doesn't mean I believe everything which is written anywhere.
Maybe if all goes well the result will be like this - but the motives are totally different - I insinuate they are money driven. Or do you think google is sending over nice t-shirts or other swag? Lol, grow up man!

    And Google is a RAT.
Your uploads will be scrutinized, you upload a crack or a game mod and the Internet Police will be at your door.
And Windows 8 kill-switch, you'll get a take down order and your computer will be bricked.

  42. What concerns me is this is obviously another way that Google will use to continue fleshing out their profiling on their customers.

In this day and age, given what we know about Google's privacy (or lack thereof) track record, it would be ludicrous to believe that submissions, even innocently, will not be "neutral".

    Tagged, tracked, and watching.

You've provided a wonderful service to the 'net, and it's great you cashed out (one assumes), but I'll be taking my interest elsewhere now.

    Best of luck.

    1. ...make that 'it would be ludicrous to believe that submissions *will* be neutral.' Time for coffee.

I type this as Google captcha makes sure I help them further flesh out their mapping services or else I cannot post. Sigh.
